This is a late twenties female who has failed to learn to moisturise before applying foundation to prevent caking and flaking. It clangs, you know that dissonant note, when brain and gut both go nope, no way, not in a month of Sundays is that believable? Well this book does it all the time, in fact the only time it rings true is when she is not talking about sex. I have to say that it compares very poorly, as a diary, as a work of fiction, because that it most certainly is and as a novel. It seemed like it may be fun and could perhaps be somewhat enlightening. Probably like quite a few people I bought this book and its sequel on a whim. If you're going to be pretentious, don't fluff it. PS Somebody please tell her that in French you don't use "le" in the date: Friday the 12 of May is vendredi 12 mai. That's the main thing I took from the book: being a call girl is just another job, about as exciting and varied as office work (but more flexible and paying more).įrustratingly, Belle doesn't answer many of the questions I would like to ask her: doesn't too much sex take away your enjoyment of sex (like eating your favourite meal five times a day), did she ever have problems with really abusive unpleasant or threatening clients, how much did she charge per hour (and how much was for the agency, how much for her).īut it's enjoyable enough light reading, and I found Belle's cheerfully cynical attitude to life very attaching (probabably obligatory if you are a call girl -) But then again, what can you write about a hooker's encounters with clients without slipping into porno descriptions of sex? One meeting with a client is pretty much like another. Most of the diary entries are not in fact about Belle's work as a call girl but about her private life (friends, family, boyfriend etc), which is not what most of us are buying the book for. Readers looking for porn or erotica will also be disappointed. It's reasonably well written, but it's not a novel (no real plot to get you hooked - sorry about the pun). I dipped into it but couldn't read it straight through. This book, based on a blog, is interesting as a documentary of how the other half lives (especially now that Belle's identity has been revealed and we know that she really was a call girl), the soft underbelly of London etc etc, but not really as a work of literature.
